Buying Bcompact Internationally: Shipping, Installation & Support Explained

International Shipping from Australia: How Does It Work?

You’ve found a Bcompact Stair or Ladder that could solve a difficult space problem in your home.

Then you notice something: we’re in Australia.

If you are researching Bcompact from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Europe or somewhere else in the world, it is completely reasonable for your next questions to be about getting the product from us to you.

Can Bcompact actually ship to my country? What happens at Customs? How safely will something this size travel? Will I have to organise international freight myself?

The good news is that international delivery is not unusual for Bcompact. Since 2018, we have successfully supplied more than 1,000 Bcompact products to customers across more than 30 countries, and international shipping has become an established part of how we operate.

Bcompact products are manufactured in Australia and shipped directly from our facility to customers around the world. We regularly work with projects throughout the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, New Zealand and many other destinations.

Most international orders travel via DHL Express Worldwide Air Freight, with tracking and shipment insurance. For destinations such as the USA, Canada and Europe, typical transit time once DHL has collected the shipment is approximately 5–8 business days, although Customs clearance and local conditions can affect final delivery times.

You do not need to find a freight company or organise international shipping yourself.

For our Custom Bcompact products, your international shipping cost and estimated shipping timeframe are included in your personalised quote before you place your order. This means you can review the product price and freight cost together before making a decision, there are no surprise shipping charges added after you have ordered.

Our team prepares the product for export, arranges the DHL booking and prepares the relevant shipping and customs documentation. Depending on the destination, this may include the Commercial Invoice, Certificate of Australian Origin and other product, origin or country-specific documentation.

Once collected, the shipment receives a DHL Waybill Number so you can follow its journey. Your mobile number is also connected to the booking so DHL can contact you directly with tracking or delivery updates.

Each Bcompact is carefully prepared for the journey in a substantial MDF shipping box, with protective packaging around the components and reinforcement around vulnerable areas. We regularly receive positive comments from international customers about how substantial and well protected their Bcompact is when it arrives.

What about Customs, duties and taxes?

This is often the part first-time international buyers are most concerned about and it is also an area where Bcompact's experience shipping internationally can make the process considerably easier.

Much of the Customs preparation is completed before your Bcompact product leaves Australia. Our team prepares the Commercial Invoice and relevant export documentation, provides the appropriate product classification and origin information, and works with DHL to ensure the shipment has the documentation required for its destination.

We also check whether Free Trade Agreement benefits may apply

Because Bcompact products are manufactured in Australia, shipments to a number of countries may be eligible for preferential treatment under one of Australia's Free Trade Agreements, provided the particular product meets the applicable Rules of Origin.

For our US customers, for example, Australia and the United States have the Australia–United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA).

Where a Bcompact product qualifies, we provide the origin and supporting information required so that the importer and Customs broker can claim the appropriate preferential treatment available under the agreement.

Similar arrangements may apply in other countries with which Australia has a Free Trade Agreement, and our team prepares the relevant documentation for each shipment where applicable.

Free Trade Agreements do not necessarily remove every tax, tariff, surcharge or Customs charge that a destination country may impose, and these rules can change over time. Final eligibility and assessment always remain with the importing country's Customs authority.

We prepare the Commercial Invoice specifically for Customs

The invoice used for international Customs clearance is prepared differently from simply presenting a single total order value.

Where permitted under the applicable Customs valuation rules, we clearly distinguish the value attributable to the imported goods from separately identifiable charges that are not part of the assessable Customs value.

For example, qualifying international freight and other separately identifiable charges may be treated differently from the value of the imported merchandise, depending on the destination country's Customs rules.

This itemisation gives DHL and the relevant Customs authority a clear and transparent breakdown of the transaction so that any duty is calculated against the correct Customs value, rather than simply treating every component of the customer's total order cost as the value of the imported goods.

We do not determine the final Customs assessment, that remains the responsibility of the destination country's Customs authority, but we do make sure the documentation supplied with the shipment is detailed, accurate and structured so that any available Customs or Free Trade Agreement treatment can be properly considered.

Occasionally, DHL or your local Customs authority may still need information directly from you as the importer.

This might include identification, a business or importer number, or an additional document required by your destination country.

If that happens, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem.

We simply recommend responding promptly and copying Bcompact into the correspondence if you need our assistance. International freight has become a very hands-on part of what we do, and if DHL requires Bcompact documentation, origin information or clarification, our team will help wherever possible.

International Bcompact orders exported from Australia do not include Australian GST, but your destination country may apply its own import VAT, GST, duties, tariffs, surcharges or Customs charges.

There is no single worldwide import rate. Rules differ between the USA, Canada, UK, European countries and other destinations, and they can change over time.

For that reason, we avoid promising a fixed import amount. Instead, we prepare the appropriate Commercial Invoice and supporting documentation for your particular shipment and help ensure that any available preferential treatment is supported, while any destination taxes, duties or Customs charges ultimately assessed remain the responsibility of the receiver.

When your Bcompact product arrives, we also recommend inspecting the outer shipping box before opening it. If anything appears damaged, photograph or video the packaging immediately and contact us. DHL transit claims operate within defined time limits, so early documentation gives us the best opportunity to assist if something has happened during transport.

For most customers, however, the international process is far less complicated than they initially imagined.

One recent US customer who purchased a Bcompact Prefab Ladder for a garage loft told us:

“Our entire experience with Bcompact was exceptional from beginning to end.”

They specifically described ordering as easy and straightforward and said purchasing and receiving their shipment was completed without problems despite the product being manufactured and shipped from Australia to the United States.

Installation & Support: What Happens After Your Bcompact Arrives?

Shipping a Bcompact successfully is only part of the process.

The next question international buyers understandably ask is:

Who is going to install it, and what happens if my installer needs help?

In most international projects, customers work with their own local builder, carpenter or suitably experienced tradesperson. Your installer does not need to have previously installed a Bcompact product.

Every applicable Bcompact order is supplied with detailed assembly and installation documentation specific to the product.

Our current installation information is provided as a sequence of numbered, step-by-step PDF guides, allowing your installer to work through assembly, installation and relevant troubleshooting in the correct order.

We deliberately use these current product-specific guides as our primary installation resource because clarity matters. Your installer needs accurate instructions for the product in front of them, not generic information that may relate to a different configuration.

And if something is unclear, they do not have to guess.

International customers and installers can contact the Bcompact team by email or telephone. For US customers, we also provide a US telephone number that routes back to our Australian headquarters.

Where appropriate, we can arrange a video call so that a member of the Bcompact team can see the installation or surrounding space in real time.

Sometimes what sounds like a complicated installation question in an email becomes very simple when we can actually see what your builder is looking at.

Different time zone does not mean no support. We communicate with customers and installers across multiple countries and time zones every week.

And our support does not necessarily end after installation.

For applicable Bcompact products, customers may be asked to submit photos and video of the completed installation so our technical team can review important connection points, mechanisms and the operation of the product.

Where something does not appear quite right, we can request further information, suggest that an installation detail is checked or arrange additional assistance where appropriate.

For qualifying products, this verification can also form part of activating the applicable Conditional Extended Warranty.

In other words, there can be an actual person at Bcompact reviewing your finished installation, not simply an automated online warranty registration.

If you need assistance later, you can still contact us.

We maintain customer and product records and can often refer back to previous information when assisting with an installation question, replacement component or service enquiry.

For an international customer, that continuity matters. The box arriving at your door is not the end of our involvement.

Why Buy Bcompact from the Other Side of the World?

Ultimately, this is the bigger question behind many of the shipping and support concerns.

If you can buy something locally, why purchase a high-value Stair or Ladder manufactured thousands of kilometres away in Australia?

For many Bcompact customers, the answer is simple:

They haven't found another solution that solves their space problem in quite the same way.

Bcompact was created to provide access to an upper level without permanently sacrificing the floor space required by a conventional staircase.

Our Stair or Ladder opens when access is required and then folds sideways back towards the wall when it isn't, giving valuable space back to the room.

And when you purchase a Bcompact internationally, you are not buying an anonymous product from a reseller.

You are purchasing directly from the Australian company behind the original Bcompact side-folding system.

Bcompact developed the original side-folding staircase concept and holds granted patent protection across multiple international markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and various European regions.

That distinction becomes particularly important as similar-looking products appear online.

Buying directly from Bcompact means the product comes from the company that developed the system, manufactures it and continues to provide the technical and after-sales support behind it.

The international customer experience therefore extends far beyond arranging freight.

We manufacture and prepare your product in Australia.

We carefully package it for export.

We arrange its international transport.

We prepare the relevant shipping documentation.

We assist with Bcompact-related Customs questions where required.

We provide detailed installation information.

We remain available to your installer.

And, where applicable, we continue through post-installation verification and warranty support.

More than 1,000 Bcompact products have already been supplied to customers in over 30 countries since 2018.

If you are considering joining them, start with your space rather than your location.

Send us your Floor to Floor height, available run and a few photographs of the proposed access area. You can work in millimetres or inches.

Our team can help determine whether your project is best suited to a ready-made Bcompact Prefab Folding Ladder or a Custom Bcompact Stair or Ladder and we can explain what shipping and support will look like for your particular country before you decide to proceed.

Being on the other side of the world doesn't mean being on your own.
