Every Great Design Starts With a Problem
When Damian was building his new home on the northeast coast of Attica, Greece, he faced a challenge many homeowners encounter when creating loft spaces.
The loft above the master bedroom would become his home office, but the available area for access was restricted by several architectural features including a chimney structure, a small window and limited floor space.
A conventional staircase would have dominated the room.
A standard loft ladder wasn't the ideal solution either.
Rather than giving up, Damian decided to experiment with ideas himself.
Using foam blocks and timber strips, he created a simple physical model to help visualise how a staircase might fit within the available space.
His message to us included the words:
"Please don't laugh, but it gives a pretty good idea of the space."
We weren't laughing.
In fact, the model instantly communicated the challenge better than pages of drawings ever could. It showed the available floor space, potential stair angles, the loft opening position and the obstacles we would need to work around.
That simple model became the starting point for the entire design process.

Turning Constraints Into Opportunities
Once we understood the space, we began exploring possible solutions.
The challenge wasn't simply fitting a staircase into the available area. The staircase also needed to be safe, comfortable enough for daily use and visually suited to the home.
Rather than forcing a standard design into the space, we developed a custom solution that combined a folding stair-ladder with a stepped platform.
The platform became a key part of the design.
Instead of treating the height changes, chimney wall and surrounding constraints as obstacles, they became part of the solution. By introducing the platform, we were able to create a comfortable climbing angle while maintaining a compact footprint.
As the design developed, measurements, sketches and discussions helped refine the concept until the final layout emerged.
What originally appeared to be a difficult architectural challenge was gradually transformed into a practical and elegant solution.

From Concept to Reality
Today, the finished ladder provides daily access to Damian's loft home office while integrating seamlessly into the architecture of the room.
One of our favourite aspects of this project is how closely the finished installation resembles the original concept model.
The custom platform creates a smooth transition from floor level to staircase, while the folding ladder provides comfortable access to the loft above. Even the small window that initially appeared to complicate the design became part of the character of the finished installation.
Following completion, Damian left us a five-star Google review, describing the staircase as:
"An extremely elegant addition to the decor of our bedroom."
He also described it as a conversation piece and highlighted how comfortable and sturdy it is to use every day.
For us, this project is a reminder that great design doesn't begin with products.
It begins with understanding a problem.
Sometimes the best ideas start with a sketch.
Sometimes they start with a foam model.
And sometimes they become one of the most talked-about features in a home.
