Start Here: Measure your space!
First: How Much Wall Space Do You Actually Have?
Before anything else, this is the first and most important step.
👉 How much run length do you have along your supporting side wall?
This is the space the unit needs along the attachment wall.
If you don’t have enough run → a stair won’t fit
If you do → you have more flexibility
Rule of thumb is that the higher the floor you're trying to reach, the longer the run you will need.
Minimum run guide (Bcompact products only - dependent on height of product!):
Folding Stair: 1242mm/48.89" run length (height of 2200mm/86.61")
Folding Ladder: 776mm/30.55" run length (height of 2200mm/86.61")
No matter what you prefer if the space isn’t there, the decision is already made.
(note that your project consultant may offer alternative designs as it is largely dependent on the measurements you provide and the preferred design!)

Second: Check Your Head Clearance (Ceiling Hole / Entry Area)
This is the one people often overlook and it can completely change your decision.
👉 What are the measurements of your ceiling hole/entry point and can modifications be done (in this case minimum recommended sizes will be provided).
If this space is restricted or cannot be modified, it becomes a critical measurement needed to ensure adequate head clearance.
Why it matters
A stair has a lower angle, which means:
You travel more “forward” as you climb
You need more clear head space at the top (a longer ceiling hole)
If the ceiling opening is tight:
You may need to bend or duck when using a stair to avoid head strike
Which defeats the whole point of choosing a more comfortable solution!
In some cases, even if your run length is sufficient, a ladder will be recommended due to head strike risk.
What to do
Measure your ceiling hole length and width as well as floor to ceiling height
Input this into the configurator OR
Speak with a Bcompact Project Consultant
This allows us to design a solution that actually works in your space not just on paper.
Third: What Is the Height and Usability of the Upper Level?
Now think about the space you’re accessing.
👉 How much headroom is available on the upper floor?
Bcompact Stairs include a bi-folding handrail which requires more clearance at the top landing.
Minimum requirement is 1150mm/45.28" for a Narrow Stair with a Handrail.
Important reality check
If your upper space has a limited head height of less than 1154mm/45.43" you cannot fit a Folding Stair, if it is less than 1000mm/39.37" you will need to forgo the handrail on the Folding Ladder and if it is less than 536mm/21.65" then our products simply will not fit.
But wait! Do not panic! We have design options for almost any scenario including roof top hatches that have limited access. Contact us for free design support and we'll find a solution for you!
If the space is limited and primarily used for occasional storage then honestly it would be a waste of money to purchase a Stair. In these situations, a prefab ladder is the smarter and more appropriate solution.

Fourth: Time Frame
One of the biggest differences between a custom folding stair or ladder and a prefab model is the overall project timeline.
Custom Folding Stairs & Ladders
A custom Bcompact design is a far more tailored process. Every project is designed around your exact space, access requirements, ceiling opening, angle, floor-to-floor height, and aesthetic preferences. Throughout the process, there are multiple checkpoints to ensure the final product fits perfectly and functions exactly as intended.
This process can include:
Design consultations and technical discussions
Review of photos, sketches, and site measurements
Video calls where required
Technical drawings and revisions for approval
Tailored guidance from our design team throughout the project
Because every unit is individually designed and manufactured, the timeframe is generally around 10 weeks from approval to completion, depending on the complexity of the project and current production schedules.
For many homeowners, builders, and architects, this extra time is worthwhile because it allows the flexibility to optimize comfort, usability, aesthetics, and functionality for their exact space. Custom units are available across multiple configurations, including Stair or Ladder designs, Fixed Step or Full-Fold variations, and Narrow or Wide formats. With additional Extras available too! (like stains, locks, handrails and gates!)
Prefab Folding Attic Ladders
Prefab models are designed to simplify the process and dramatically reduce lead times. Instead of designing from scratch, these ladders are manufactured in standardised sizes with fixed specifications.
That means there’s far less back-and-forth required during ordering. In most cases, the process simply involves:
Choosing the correct prefab size
Confirming measurements and shipping details
Finalising payment and delivery information
Of course, the Bcompact team is still available for phone calls, guidance, and installation support whenever needed but the process is intentionally streamlined for speed and simplicity.
Because prefab units eliminate lengthy design and technical approval stages, the average timeframe is typically only around 14 days from order confirmation to dispatch.
For customers who need a fast, space-saving access solution without the wait of a fully custom project, prefab can be an excellent option. Note however that finishes and extras are limited on these options!
All options are available for worldwide delivery!
Only After That: Stair vs Ladder Choice
Once you’ve confirmed:
Run length
Head clearance
Upper floor space
Project timeframe
👉 Then you can choose based on comfort and preference.

Stair vs Ladder: What's the difference?
Both options share the same core advantages:
Patented side-folding action (not bulky pull-down systems)
Folds flat to ~40mm
Made from durable bamboo composite
Designed for modern, space-efficient homes
What Is a Bcompact Folding Stair?
A folding stair is designed to feel like a real staircase, just space-saving.
Key features
Customised to your space (6 - 8 weeks lead time)
Angle: 50–60°
Step rise: ~210–295mm/ 8.27" - 11.61"
Deeper, more comfortable treads
Patented Bi-Folding handrail included
Optional integrated gate available
Premium extras available (embedded spring and integrated gate)
👉 Best for:
Daily use
Living spaces
Comfortable access
What Is a Bcompact Folding Ladder?
A folding ladder is designed for compact spaces where stairs won’t fit.
Key features
Customised to your space (6 - 8 week lead time) or Prefab for a quick, budget friendly solution (14 day lead time, limited options)
Angle: 60–70°
Higher step rise 285-400mm/ 11.22"-15.75"
Shorter run length
Optional fixed handrail available
👉 Best for:
Tight layouts
Storage or occasional access
Attic-style applications
Limited project time frame
Feature | Folding Stair | Folding Ladder | |
|---|---|---|---|
Space required | More | Less | |

Final Thoughts: The Right Way to Decide
Most people start by asking:
“Do I want a stair or a ladder?”
But the better question is:
👉 “What does my space actually allow?”
Simple decision flow:
Check your run length
Check your head clearance
Check your upper floor height
Consider your project timeline
Then:
Need help working it out?
Every space has its own constraints and that’s where the right design matters.
