Now THIS Is Architecture
There’s a big difference between decorating a home and truly designing one.
Real architecture isn’t just about making spaces look beautiful. It’s about understanding how people live, how homes function, and how every square metre can work harder. It’s about looking at a space and asking:
“What do we already have here?”
“How can we make better use of it?”
“How can we amplify the space instead of wasting it?”
That mindset is exactly what drew us to this recent renovation project in Portugal by architect Miguel Sousa of Gummavitta.
During what initially started as a bathroom renovation in an older home, Miguel uncovered hidden unused space above the ceiling. Instead of leaving it abandoned or inaccessible, he immediately recognised the opportunity to create something meaningful from it.
That’s the kind of thinking we love to support at Bcompact.
Not following what’s considered “normal”.
Not accepting wasted space as inevitable.
Not defaulting to bulky permanent staircases that dominate a room.
But designing thoughtfully. Creatively. Intelligently.
Using every inch.
To access the newly discovered loft space, Miguel incorporated a custom Bcompact Folding Staircase creating practical access while maintaining the clean architectural feel of the home.
The result is a project that feels clever, calm, functional, and deeply intentional.
And honestly?
This is the kind of architecture we believe deserves more attention.

Why Traditional Stairs Often Limit Small Spaces
One of the biggest challenges in compact renovations is access.
As soon as an attic, loft, mezzanine, or elevated storage area becomes usable, the next question is always:
“How do we actually get up there?”
Traditional staircases often create more problems than they solve in smaller homes. They permanently consume valuable floor space, interrupt layouts, and can completely change how a room functions.
Pull-down attic ladders aren’t always much better.
Many feel temporary, awkward to use, visually intrusive, or unsuitable for everyday living spaces, especially in architectural projects where materiality and aesthetics matter just as much as function.
This is where compact folding stairs and wall-mounted folding stairs offer a very different approach.
Rather than dominating the room, they allow the space to remain flexible.
When folded away, the room continues functioning normally. When opened, the staircase provides comfortable access to elevated spaces without requiring a large permanent footprint.
In Miguel’s renovation project, this became especially important because the newly discovered loft area wasn’t part of the original plan.
The hidden space only became apparent once the ceiling was opened during renovation works.
For many designers, that unexpected discovery could easily have become an inconvenience or simply remained inaccessible. But for forward-thinking architects, these moments become opportunities.
As Miguel explained during our interview:
“Architecture is all about space.”
That philosophy shaped the entire project.
Instead of abandoning the newly discovered volume above the bathroom ceiling, the goal became finding a practical, elegant way to integrate it into the home’s daily experience.

How Folding Staircase Solutions Create More Usable Living Space
What makes projects like this so interesting is that the staircase itself becomes part of the architectural thinking.
The goal isn’t simply:
“Add stairs.”
It’s:
“How can we create access while preserving the room?”
That distinction changes everything.
Bcompact Folding Staircase solutions are designed specifically for situations where flexibility and efficient use of space matter.
Unlike traditional fixed staircases, the patented side-folding design allows the stair to fold flat against the wall when not in use, dramatically reducing its visual and physical footprint.
For projects like Miguel’s renovation, this creates several important advantages:
• More usable floor space
• Better room flexibility
• Cleaner architectural lines
• Comfortable loft access
• Minimal visual interruption
Because the staircase folds away, the bathroom below remains functional and open rather than permanently dominated by a stair structure.
This is especially valuable in compact homes, mezzanine spaces, loft conversions, and older renovations where every centimetre matters.
The custom folding staircase used in this project was also carefully tailored to suit the architecture of the home itself.
Older homes often present unique challenges:
• Non-square walls
• Uneven surfaces
• Irregular ceiling geometry
• Tight access points
As Miguel discussed during the installation process, older buildings rarely behave like perfect architectural drawings.
That’s where custom folding staircase solutions become particularly valuable.
Rather than forcing the architecture to adapt to a standard staircase, the staircase adapts to the architecture.
The result feels integrated rather than added on.
This project also highlights something we strongly believe in at Bcompact:
Luxury often exists in the small details.
Not in excess.
Not in overdesign.
But in thoughtful functionality.
The concealed mechanisms, smooth operation, compact footprint, and refined material finish all contribute to a staircase that feels architectural rather than purely functional.
Combined with sustainably sourced bamboo construction and custom sizing options, these folding staircase solutions are designed for homes where aesthetics and practicality need to coexist seamlessly.

Why Innovative Architects Are Rethinking Loft Access Design
One of the most rewarding parts of this project was seeing how naturally Miguel embraced the idea of hidden potential within the home.
That mindset is increasingly important in modern architecture and renovation design.
As cities become denser and homes become more compact, architects and designers are under growing pressure to create spaces that feel larger, more flexible, and more meaningful without increasing footprint.
The answer often isn’t building more.
It’s using existing space more intelligently.
Unused roof cavities, mezzanines, elevated storage areas, and awkward overhead volumes can all become valuable functional spaces when paired with the right access solution.
This is why more architects, tiny home owners, and renovators are exploring compact folding stairs and folding staircase solutions as alternatives to traditional stairs or pull-down attic ladders.
Projects like this demonstrate that practical access doesn’t need to compromise design integrity.
Instead, thoughtful loft access design can actually enhance the architecture itself.
Miguel’s project also reinforced something we care deeply about at Bcompact: collaboration.
Throughout the process, the project involved:
• Visual planning
• Configurator design work
• Video consultations
• Installation discussions
• Real-world problem solving
That collaborative approach is essential for unique architectural spaces where no two projects are exactly the same.
We’re incredibly excited to continue supporting architects who challenge conventional thinking and look beyond standard solutions.
And if you’re in Portugal looking for an architect who genuinely thinks outside the box, we highly recommend following Miguel at Gummavitta.
Because this is what architecture should be:
Thoughtful.
Adaptive.
Creative.
Human.
Not simply making spaces look good.
But making them work beautifully too.
